He married Gertrude Theresia Diederich 3 September 1878 at ________________ Roman Catholic Church, DePere, Brown County, Wisconsin. Reverend _________________ presided. Witnesses were __________________ and ________________. The marriage is recorded in Brown County marriage records, v. 8, p. 181.

Gertrude Diederich was born 10 September 1857 at Town of Lawrence, Brown County, the daughter of John and Anna (Clasen) Diederich. Her birth is recorded in Brown County birth records, v. 13, p. 99.

She died 8 January 1897, age 39, of _____________, at Marshfield, Wood County, Wisconsin. The funeral was held _____________________, at _________________ Church, __________, and she is buried in Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery (block 2, lot 72) at Marshfield. Her death is recorded in Wood County death records, v. ____, p. _____.

Her gravestone, which does not give her correct birth date, reads:

In the Brown County marriage records, his parents' names are given as "Peter Pennings" and "Henrica Van Den Berg", and her parents' names are given as "John Didericks" and "Anna Dideriks". Witnesses were Anton Dideriks and Maria Dideriks. According to this record, they were married 3 September 1878 in the Roman Catholic Church at De Pere by the Reverend H. Van Grotel, who was pastor at the time.

The Liber Matrimonii et Defunctorum (marriage and death book) of St. Mary Catholic Church at DePere contains this entry on p. 238, which has been translated from the Latin:

Third September 1878 marriage was initiated between John Pennings, age 25, son of Peter Pennings and Henrica van den Berg, born in Holland, and Therisiai Dideriks, age 21, born in DePere, daughter of John Dideriks and Anna Dideriks. Present were Anton Dideriks, Maria Dideriks and me. Attested: A. Van Grotel.

John Pennings was a farmer, and his wife was a seamstress.

They were living at Marshfield when she died. John Pennings moved away after her death and did not keep in touch with her family.

The Pennings had no children.
