He died 3 June 1902, age 74, of tuberculosis of the heart, at Town of Howard, Brown County, Wisconsin. The funeral was probably held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, _________, and he is buried with his wife and all of their children except John in the family plot in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery on Pine Crest Road, Town of Howard.

He married Gertrude Diederich 3 April 1866 at ___________________ Roman Catholic Church, DePere, Brown County, Wisconsin. Reverend _________________ presided. Witnesses were __________________ and ________________. The marriage is recorded in the marriage register of the church. See also Brown County marriage records.

Gertrude Diederich was born 23 October 1838 at Arbach, Province of the Rhineland, West Germany, the daughter of John and Anna (Clasen) Diederich. She died 11 November 1888, age 50, of _____________ at Duck Creek, Town of Howard. The funeral was held _____________________, at _________________ Church, _________. Her death is recorded in _____ County death records.

Philip Goetz was a farmer.

Gertrude Diederich's baptism is recorded in the register of St. Remigius Catholic Church at Retterath which contains this entry for 23 October 1838, translated from the Latin:

Gertrudis Diederich of Arbach. 23rd. Born, and baptized on the following day, Gertrudis, the legitimate daughter of Joannes Diederich and of Ann Clasen, married couple of Arbach. Presented at the holy baptismal font by Mathia Schuller, married man of Kalenborn, and Anna Clasen, single, of Arbach.

Gertrude came to the United States with her parents and until her marriage, lived on their farm in Town of Lawrence, Brown County. According to the 1880 Census reports, she could neither read nor write.

The marriage of Philip Gitz and Gertrude Diderich (sic) is recorded in Brown County marriage records. See v. 5, p. 213. According to this record, the ceremony was performed at the Roman Catholic Church in the Village of De Pere by the Reverend W.A. Verbourt. Jos. Diderich was witness.

His death certificate tells when and where Philip Goetz was born and died. See Brown County death records, v. 9, p. 251.

Brown County death records tell when and where his wife died. See v. 6, p. 148. Short obituaries were published in the Fort Howard Review on 17 November 1888 (p. 4) and the State Gazette on 21 November 1888 (p. 6). Both of these newspapers were published in Brown County.
